Research Topic
The researcher will be develop and evaluate further methods of
quantifying degrees of certainty that observed interlocutors have
understood each other. The primary focus will be on the linguistic
content such as syntactic structure, but where possible, will also
take into account features of dialog signals such as silence,
laughter, and non-linguistic contributions. The researcher is required
to work on recognising when miscommunication has occurred in both
human-human and human-machine interactions.
This post is within the "Platform Theme D: Interacting with Global Content" theme of the SFI-funded ADAPT centre at Trinity College Dublin. This theme aims to empower users to interact with digital content in ways that are more intuitive and that mimic the richness of human perception in all interaction.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record (first
class or II.1 primary degree or a postgraduate qualification,
e.g. M.Sc.) in Computational Linguistics or Cognitive Science. They
should have adequate mathematical skills and knowledge of statistical
modelling as applied in language processing. Good programming skills
are desirable. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, with
strong written and oral communication skills. They must be eager to
work in and learn from multi-disciplinary and multi-organisation
teams. They should have English language certification if English is
not their first language, the requirement being: IELTS: 7.0+, TOEFL
iBT: 100+, TOEFL pBT: 600+, CEF: C1+, or equivalent.
